Khan was born Catholic. She attended the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church elementary school. Khan became a fan of rhythm and blues music as a preteen and at 11 joined a group of girls called known as the Crystalettes with her sister Taka. The late 1960s saw the formation of the Crystalettes. In 1969 she left the Panthers and dropped out of high school having been to Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She began singing in small groups throughout the Chicagoland region. The first group was the Cash McCall's Lyfe group was comprised of Hassan Khan. Chaka was married to Hassan in 1970.
