Khan was captivated by Blues and rhythm when she was an early teen. Her first girl group, called the Crystalettes aged 11 with Taka. Khan was a member of The Black Panther Party in 1967 after becoming close to Chicago-born activist Fred Hampton, a member of the Black Panther Party.
