
Julie London (nee Peck) was an American performer and actress with a career that spanned 40 years. London was a torch-singing singer known for her smooth, melodic vocals and smooth contralto voice she recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. The track she recorded "Cry me a river" which she released on her debut album, was accepted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was also nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award for her role in the role of Dixie McCall, a nurse on the television show Emergency! London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her professional career began as an actress while she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's long and successful acting career started around 1944 with roles in movies. They included roles as the lead female character in several westerns. She also appeared with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-1950s, she signed a recording deal with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional musical career. The album she recorded her final studio album released in 1969. She maintained her popularity as the female star role in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) in which she was co-starring alongside Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband, produced the show.
